Colleen was born in Fort Worth and graduated from North Texas State University. She also received a master of religious education degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. For 27 years she was the executive director of Guardianship Services Inc. in Fort Worth, a non-profit organization that she helped form. Among many other awards she received, she was the first person to receive the National Master Guardian “Star” Award, the Tarrant Area Gerontological Society’s Leadership Award and was made president emeritus of the Texas Guardianship Association. Through her work at GSI she helped many cognitively impaired elderly and mentally challenged adults who were unable to care for themselves and had no friends or family to assist them.
Colleen had a loving and lively spirit and brought joy to so many people with her kindness, wit and good humor. She loved helping less fortunate people and worshipping with her church, where she was a deacon. She sang in the choir for about 30 years and loved the old, traditional hymns. She led an exemplary Christian life and her favorite scripture was, “What does the Lord require of thee but to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with thy God.” Micah 6:8.
Colleen was preceded in death by her dearly loved parents, Leo and Dorothy Colton.
Survivors: Devoted sister, Cynthia “CJ” Colton, who cared for her in her final years; many cousins; and her very supportive family at Broadway Baptist Church, especially the Chancel Choir and the “Journey 4 Life” Sunday school department.
