Ernest Dwight Lewis, a gifted western artist, teacher, and storyteller, peacefully passed away on December 28th, 2024, at the age of 81. He is survived by his sons, Kim and Kenne Lewis, Ernest Priester, and Bowie O'Connor; daughter, Kay Kimbrough; sisters, Jennifer Lewis Poston, Deborah Lewis Harchfield, Andrea Lewis Sherman; brother-in-law, Mike Harchfield; and numerous grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Viola Jackson Lewis and Dwight John Lewis, as well as his brothers-in-law, Carol Poston and Stanley Sherman.
Born on November 28th, 1943, in Greenville, Mississippi, Ernie graduated from Munford High School in Tennessee before joining the Air Force in 1962. He was stationed in Arizona and later settled there as a civilian after his military service. In 1977, Ernie's love for rodeo brought him to Texas, where he lived near Kowbell, the first indoor rodeo arena in the United States. He was a skilled calf roper; he also worked in construction and was a talented welder.
Though Ernie was deeply involved in these pursuits, his true passion lay in oil painting. In his later years, he fully embraced his love for western and wildlife art, displaying his work in many galleries. Painting brought him immense joy, and he spent countless hours immersed in his craft.
Ernie will be remembered as a remarkable artist, father, husband, brother, and friend. He leaves behind a legacy of creativity and love that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
A celebration of Ernie's life will be held at Brown Owen & Brumley Funeral Home in Fort Worth on Sunday, January 12th, at 2:00 PM. He will be laid to rest at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery on Monday, January 13th, at 10:15 AM. Family and friends are invited to join in honoring his life and legacy.
