John was born Thursday, November 2, 1939 in Odessa, Texas to the late LB and Gail Henson in Odessa, Texas. He graduated from Odessa High School in 1958. He attended Odessa College from 1958 to 1960, where he played baseball. While at Odessa College, he worked at KOSA-TV. He transferred to Texas Technological College in 1960. While in Lubbock, he worked at KLBK-TV. He graduated from Texas Technological College with a Bachelor of Arts in Advertising in 1964. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Navy. He proudly served his country as an Ensign from 1964 to 1966. While in the Navy, he attended Naval Aviation Training at Saufley Field in Pensacola, Florida. Upon graduation from aviation training, he was stationed at Alameda Naval Air Station in Alameda, California. He served aboard the USS Coral Sea (CV-43) in 1965 during the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1966 he returned to Lubbock and attended graduate school at Texas Tech University, where he earned a Masters of Business Administration. He also served in the Civil Air Patrol in Lubbock, and it was not unusual for him to be on a flight over the weekend when he would make sure his daughter was outside and looking up in time to see him fly over their home. He was the station manager at KTXT-TV in Lubbock until his retirement in 2005. He was also an Associate Vice Provost at Texas Tech University upon his retirement from Texas Tech in 2005. John was an avid enthusiast of aviation, military history, Texas history, and Native American history. He enjoyed camping trips with his children. It was not unusual for him to plan a road trip with his kids. One fond memory is that of road trips with his son, John. He would back the car to the end of the driveway and tell his son to pick a direction: right or left. Left went to the mountains, right went to Six Flags. His son often picked “left”, and many an adventure in the mountain was had. He was a man who loved his family with his whole heart. His absence will leave a hole in our hearts.
John is preceded in death by his parents; son, John Wright Henson; and brother, Loren Boyd Henson.
