Linda Lorenz

FORT WORTH-Linda Lorenz, a resident of Fort Worth for 52 years, passed away on Sunday December 16, 2018 at the age of 94.
Interment: Assured that she is with her Lord, she will be buried with her loved ones in Canada.
Her given name was Sieglinde Thesese Eickenscheidt. She was born on March 29, 1924 in the province of Oldenburg Germany, where she grew up on a family farm and developed a lifelong love for animals (particularly horses) and swimming. Like most of her peers, she was inducted into the Hitler Youth and the German military, serving first as a nurse, beginning at the age of fourteen, and later as an aerial reconnaissance photograph specialist with the Luftwaffe. This wartime experience molded her future career in photography. She witnessed and survived a raid on a Frisian Island airfield and the bombing of Hamburg. Linda married and had a son, Hans Lorenz, in1944. After the war and a divorce, she emigrated to Midland, Ontario, Canada, along with her son, Hans and her mother, Helene Meiners, in 1955. There Linda worked for the Leitz (Leica) Camera Company for many years testing Leica lenses, one of which was used by NASA. Tragically, in 1966, her only son Hans was horribly burned in an accident in Vietnam, while serving with the U.S. Marines. Eleven days later he died in a hospital in California with his mother at his side. Linda returned to Canada, where she soon came to the attention of Mitch Wilder, the first Director of the Amon Carter Museum. He invited her to move to Fort Worth to head the museum’s photographic services, where she received numerous accolades for her ability to reproduce the artwork. She enjoyed meeting many artists and dignitaries, retiring in1990. Linda grew to detest charlatans, demagogues, and militarism. She held three citizenships: German, Canadian, and American. She particularly loved Fort Worth and Texas, often referring to herself as a “Texican.” Her strong character, motivation, persistence, and ability to relate her wealth of experiences touched many lives.
