Lucy was born October 14, 1933 to loving parents, Jose & Nicolasa Gasca in Fort Worth, Texas. Lucy learned the trade skills of sewing at the age of 7. Lucy Gasca married Robert Rodela Coronado, Sr. in Weatherford, TX on December 8, 1951 when she was 17. Her trade became a passion and set her forth on a journey of teaching, healing and fighting spirit. As a Hispanic female, she felt the discrimination not only for her ethnicity but also for the lack of education opportunities. On January 26, 1968 with $100.00 startup she began a new life with her husband, Robert and two sons, Robert Jr. and Anthony by forming Coronado’s Custom Fashions on West Berry Street. During the first year of operation she carried Michelle while grieving over the loss of her father. As if becoming a new entrepreneur was not enough of a challenge. Lucy was a devoted Catholic, wife, mother, godmother, sister, aunt, political activist, and Hispanic businesswoman giving back to the community. Her donations to charities were based upon programs for adult education, medical assistance and business mentoring programs.
“Small business owners need to thrive for they stimulate the local economy. There is enough for everyone. You have to be willing to be flexible and sacrifice but it is worth it.”
Texas Governor Ann Richards awarded Outstanding Woman in Business of the Year to Lucy. This would begin the legacy of awards to follow. She was an active member of the Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, LULAC, Fort Worth Hispanic Debutante Association, St. Andrew Catholic Ladies Circle group and her favorite Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas – Fort Worth Chapter to which she was a Charter member. Lucy was a masterful tailor, fashion designer & savvy in negotiations for teaching her trade skills. She was often a Fashion Design Contributor on the campuses of Rosemont Middle School & Texas Christian University. Lucy would create charitable fashion shows in fundraising efforts for those organizations to create scholarships for young women.
In 2003 Lucy was diagnosed with kidney renal failure. She contributed to medical clinical trials so that future patients could survive. She created clothing for dialysis patients to receive medical treatment with dignity. Lucy was the longest living survivor of this disease in Tarrant County. She defeated the life expectancy given to her in 2003 by surviving dialysis treatment for 16 ½ years.
Lucy was a devoted wife to our Father just shy 4 days from their 68th wedding anniversary. Love can endure all. She was simply the best.
Lucy is preceded in death by her Parents, Jose & Nicolasa Gasca; siblings, Pascual Gasca, Carmen Araujo, Mary Rodriguez, Josie Bainbridge, Frank Gasca and Pauline Gasca Valenciano.
Survivors: Husband of 68 years, Robert Rodela Coronado, Sr.; sons Robert Coronado, Jr. and L. Anthony Coronado; daughter Maria Michelle Coronado; son in law J. Richard Tinker; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; sister, Lupe Jimenez; and brother, Manuel Gasca.
