Melva Anabel Thornton

August 25, 1966 — December 25, 2024

Fort Worth, Texas

Melva Anabel Thornton was born in Irving, Texas to Fernando and Olga Paz on August 25, 1966. Melva was the oldest of 3 siblings, Fernando Paz, Melisa Jones, and Maria Montelongo. As a young child Melva loved a good game of softball. She played on many teams growing up and even coached a couple of years as an adult.

At 18 Melva met and fell in love with her soulmate, Donald Thornton. They have been married the past 37 years. Together they raised 2 beautiful children, Nicole and Christopher.

Melva graduated with an Associates Degree from TCC and obtained her License for Chemical Dependency Counseling. Melva always had a heart to serve and help those in need. For the past 27 years she has left her mark as "Big Mama" on many children and adults at Cook Childrens Medical Center where she worked as a Program Specialist. She loved bringing out the best in the children she worked with and her job gave her much joy.

She had a big heart, was humble, and bold. She was never afraid to be a voice for those who had no voice. She led by Jesus' example to go after the lost sheep and had a way of pushing you to be a better version of yourself. She loved with her whole heart her family, husband, children, and being an "Abuelita" to her 5 grandchildren. Her children often teased her that she only saw them so she could see her grand-babies. There was never a time she didn't have time for them.

Melva will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She would want everyone to remember, "don't worry about the past because it's gone and you can't change it, don't worry about the future because it's not promised, and enjoy the present because it's here and all you have right now."

Melva is survived by her parents, Fernando and Olga Paz, siblings Fernando, Melisa, and Maria, husband Donald Thornton, daughter Nicole and spouse Stephanie Mullen, son Christopher and spouse Taylor Thornton, grandchildren Addisyn, Casen, Mason, Krystine, and William, sister-in-laws Rita Ridley, Melissa Guthrie, and Amy Short along with several beloved nieces and nephews.
