NORTH RICHLAND HILLS-Tommie Alvesta Coleman passed away Saturday, April 10, 2021.
GRAVESIDE SERVICE: Tommie and her beloved husband, William will be laid to rest in a private burial Thursday, April 15, 2021 at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park.
VISITATION: 10 A.M. TO 12 P.M. Thursday, April 15, 2021 at the funeral home.
Tommie was born August 10, 1933 to the late Thomas and Ethel Burress in Troy, Tennessee.

Mom loved to dance. She was always turning heads on the dance floor. I remember one time we were at a family wedding and all the young ones were out on the dance floor. My Mom decided she wanted to get in on the fun and went out to join them. Everyone on the dance floor and for that matter the entire place stopped to watch Mom. She danced so beautifully, everyone was amazed that at her age she could still get out there and show all the kids how it’s done.

Memaw worked security for Braniff Airlines. The Dallas Cowboys flew Braniff back then. However, the ladies that worked at the airline could never get any of the Cowboys to autograph anything. Memaw was not deterred, she told them she’d get the Cowboys to do it. No one believed her. So one day, when the Cowboys were boarding the plane, Memaw told them there was a new procedure prior to boarding the aircraft, they all had to sign in first. No one batted an eye, they just filed up and signed the paper one by one until they all boarded the plane. Everyone at Braniff laughed so much…they could not believe they fell for it. She was their hero, she got the signatures!

When I was young I wanted to play football. Mom wouldn’t let me until I was in the fourth grade. She wasn’t a big football fan, but after a few years when we lined up for a play, I would look to the sidelines where the coach would be and instead there was mom following us up and down the field. I also remember all of my friends wanting to be at my house because she was the cool mom…Oh yeah, and there was that fried chicken!

My strongest memory of my Grandma and a life lesson that I have carried on for my whole life started one day in the back of the car. Me and her were sitting waiting at a gas station for my dad and Granddaddy to come out. I was young, and it was beginning to thunder. With tears in my eyes, I told her I was afraid of the upcoming storm. She gave me a squeeze and told me some words that I have never forgotten. She said “Fear is not from God. God never wants us to be afraid or live our life in fear.” I have always remembered those words and they have brought me comfort in times when I was afraid. My Grandma loved God, had a lot of faith, and was a strong lady. She was not afraid.
I loved hearing the stories Grandma told about when she was a young girl. Her face would just brighten up when she was telling them. Looking back at old pictures these past few days, I have loved seeing how much style she had! I will miss my Grandma, but am happy to know that her and Granddaddy will be together.

Will and Tommie were simple people. They didn’t need all of the many gadgets in the world we have today. They worked hard all of their lives and raised 3 lovely children. They used to go on walks, talk, laugh and they loved sitting out on their deck watching birds and any other creatures that ventured into their yard. They were always very kind to me and made me feel like a part of the family. They gave to me the most precious thing in my life…Lynn, their son.
Tommie is preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband of 65 years who passed away the day before her, William Lynn Coleman.

Burress; sister, Ruby Onez McAlpin; granddaughter, Lisa Michelle Schuster and spouse, Sandy; granddaughter, Andrea Lori Duff and spouse, Michael; ; grandson, James Isaac Boane, III and spouse, Kristen; granddaughter, Brandi Leigh Raney and spouse Michael; granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Boane; granddaughter, Candice Shay Baggett and spouse, Michael; granddaughter, Cloe Ray Wilson and spouse, Andrew.
