Bill was born Nov. 7, 1943, to Eugene and Helen Vestal Jones in Fort Worth. He graduated from high school in Blytheville, Ark., in 1960 and immediately joined the Air Force, which became a 20-year career. His military career was influenced by his stepdad, Paul Byrd, who served for 22 years in the Air Force. Growing up as a military child, Bill lived in various states and Puerto Rico, then his career took him to various other places. He was a Vietnam War veteran and was also based in Okinawa and other bases.
After retiring from the Air Force in 1981, he moved back to Texas and worked 20 years at Able Machinery Movers in Dallas. Most recently, he was the on-site security for Chisholm Trail Townhomes in Fort Worth.
Bill was an avid sports fan. He was a fan of the New York Yankees, cheering only for the Texas Rangers when not playing his beloved Yankees, and the Dallas Cowboys. As a younger man, he enjoyed roller skating, golf and bowling. He was a coach for the Youth American Bowling Association in Fort Worth. Bill mentored many young men throughout the later years of his life, offering sound advice to those seeking guidance.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Robert Jones, and stepdad, Paul Byrd.
Survivors: Mother, Helen Vestal Jones Byrd; son, William Madison Jones and wife, Ann, of Arlington; son, Paul David Jones of Wichita, Kan.; grandson, Randol of Arlington; and numerous cousins and friends, who will also miss him.
